Orchid fruiting success is unrelated to surrounding floral resources in South Australian plant communities

چکیده

Abstract To maintain recruitment in orchid populations an ecosystem setting, we must understand how surrounding floral resources affect fruiting success. We studied success two endemic Australian species, Diuris pardina and Glossodia major, relation to resources. has a visually deceptive pollination strategy via mimicry of pea flowers, attracting pollinators associated with co-flowering plants Pultenaea. major displays dummy anthers more generalist strategy. expected both species positively correlate conspecific heterospecific density because should be enhanced by the attraction higher densities native bees. D. abundance Pultenaea flowers. Surveying 18 plots South Australia, counted individuals flowers conspecifics heterospecifics returned count that set fruit. conducted Pearson correlations between richness, Shannon index individual species. Fruiting was correlated for but not G. major. No relationship found Pultenaea; instead it invasive Lavandula stoechas.

Is Required for Maintenance of the Basic Plant Architecture and Floral Transition in Orchid

We report here the isolation and identification of an orchid homeobox gene, DOH1 , from Dendrobium Madame ThongIn. Analyses of its sequence and genomic organization suggest that DOH1 may be the only class 1 knox gene in the genome. DOH1 mRNA accumulates in meristem-rich tissues, and its expression is greatly downregulated during floral transition. In situ hybridization analysis demonstrates tha...

Are tetraploids more successful? Floral signals, reproductive success and floral isolation in mixed-ploidy populations of a terrestrial orchid.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Polyploidization, the doubling of chromosome sets, is common in angiosperms and has a range of evolutionary consequences. Newly formed polyploid lineages are reproductively isolated from their diploid progenitors due to triploid sterility, but also prone to extinction because compatible mating partners are rare. Models have suggested that assortative mating and increased rep...

Floral adaptation to local pollinator guilds in a terrestrial orchid.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Studies of local floral adaptation in response to geographically divergent pollinators are essential for understanding floral evolution. This study investigated local pollinator adaptation and variation in floral traits in the rewarding orchid Gymnadenia odoratissima, which spans a large altitudinal gradient and thus may depend on different pollinator guilds along this gradi...

Diverse pollinator communities enhance plant reproductive success.

Understanding the functional consequences of biodiversity loss is a major goal of ecology. Animal-mediated pollination is an essential ecosystem function and service provided to mankind. However, little is known how pollinator diversity could affect pollination services. Using a substitutive design, we experimentally manipulated functional group (FG) and species richness of pollinator communiti...
